Update on the death certification reforms and stakeholder engagement events in August 2024

Announcement: update on the forthcoming changes to the process of death certification reforms in England and Wales

As you will know from our announcement of 15 April, the statutory medical examiners’ system and associated death certification reforms will come into effect on 9 September 2024. Yesterday, the Government laid a written ministerial statement, which can be found at Written statements – Written questions, answers and statements – UK Parliament, which confirms that commencement date.

Stakeholder events in August 2024

We wrote to you on 21 May 2024, about our plan to hold roundtable events with stakeholders in the run up to 9 September 2024. Unfortunately, the sensitivities of the pre-election period meant these had to be paused, but we are now able to schedule these events.

The first round of engagement sessions will take place on 7 August at 15:00 and 9 August at 10:00. Please note you will only need to attend one of the sessions as the same issues will be discussed on both days and we will be sending round invites for the sessions shortly.

The second round of engagement sessions will take place on 27 August at 14:00 and 29 August at 11:30. Again, you will only need to attend one of these sessions.

To make the most of these events we would ask you to raise issues for discussion prior to the meetings with us using our e-mail address FuneralSectorBurialsandCremation@justice.gov.uk. This will help us to ensure that colleagues from the right government departments can attend to address those issues where appropriate.
