Standard Rules Permit Public Consultation – Environment agency

Members are alerted that the Environment Agency has a new consultation, we ask you to respond please to this

Public Consultation

We have now opened a public consultation on our proposed Standard Rules Permits for cemeteries.  Please find the consultation page via the link below:

Standard Rules Consultation No 30 – Proposals for New Standard Rules Permits for Groundwater Activities – Environment Agency – Citizen Space

You will see that this consultation also proposes new SRPs for closed-loop ground source heating and cooling systems – you can choose to only respond to those bits which are relevant to you.

Responding to the consultation

The proposed SRPs and associated generic risk assessments can be accessed on the page above by scrolling down to the “related” section at the bottom.  You will also find the consultation document there which explains (and ask questions about) our proposals. The best way to respond to the consultation is via the link in box that says “Give us your views”.

Guidance

Our cemeteries guidance states that new cemetery developments must do one of the following:

  • meet all the criteria in the exemptions for low environmental risk cemeteries
  • operate under a standard rules permit (when made available)
  • operate under a bespoke permit

Standard rules permits (SRPs) are suitable for activities where the generic risks are well understood and mitigated, and so a site-specific risk assessment is not necessary. SRPs are beneficial to cemetery operators because they are cheaper than bespoke permits and are usually issued in far quicker timescales.
